Electrical Installation

Program Mission:

Ralph McKee’s Electrical Installation program is NYSED Approved. The focus of the program is to prepare students in a potential career in the Electrical Industry and/or continuation for Post-Secondary degree programs in Electrical Engineering.

Overview of Electrical Program:

10th Year: Students will be introduced to Electricity fundamentals including: Electrical Safety on the worksite, Use of hand tools, taking proper measurements using a ruler/tape measure, Electricity basics (voltage, current resistance), Splicing of electrical wires, Electrical circuit components and basic circuit construction.

Students will be introduced to power tools, blueprint reading and design, Electrical circuit components, continue low voltage circuit construction, Circuit troubleshooting,  Electricity basics (voltage, current resistance), Electrical circuit components and basic circuit construction. In addition students will begin looking into electrical careers along with jobsite ethics.

11th Year- Students will be introduced to Residential Electrical systems, continued blueprint reading and design, Electrical circuit components, continue residential circuit construction, Circuit troubleshooting, Electricity circuit testing (multimeters) Residential circuit planning and budgeting. Students will be utilizing various wiring methods including Romex, Armored Cable.

12th Year: Students will be introduced to commercial electrical systems, continued blueprint reading and design, Electrical circuit components, commercial circuit construction, Circuit troubleshooting, Electricity circuit testing (multimeters) Commercial circuit planning and budgeting. Students will be utilizing various wiring methods including electrical pipe (EMT/Rigid conduit.) Hand bending. Students will also complete training in Industrial Motor control systems including single phase/3 phase AC motors. DC motor theory will also be introduced. In addition, students will receive Solar system introductory training along with Telecommunications wiring training including copper and fiber optic network installations.

The Electrical Installation program is OSHA on the NCCER curriculum and focused around Electrical Service Excellence. (OSHA) Student instruction begins with basic competencies such as shop safety, hand tools identification/usage, EPA regulations, “Right To Know Laws,” and OSHA requirements.

Students in this program progress from introductory knowledge of shop safety and basic Electrical repair from basic electrical circuit installation to advance troubleshooting of complex electrical systems.  Freshmen students will be familiar with light installation and repair of low voltage systems including door bell, intercom and alarm systems. Each year students review past experiences and are offered more complex problems.  The senior year students use all the latest state of the art testing and analysis equipment for the diagnosing and servicing the residential/commercial electrical and mechanical systems

Students in this program also will be receiving the basic knowledge needed to for entry to multiple forms of electrical apprentice programs such as those offered by the NYC electrical union (IBEW Local #3) as well the NYC MTA, Con Edison and others. Students will also attend workshops by outside part manufactures, and receive certificates of product use knowledge. Students will be given the opportunity to compete in local, state, and national Electrical knowledge and hands-on contests.

For the student that wishes to continue their education, we have Articulation agreements with two schools; PIMA College and Lincoln Technical College. The students are also eligible to work in a cooperative work setting, if their grades are in good standing with the school.
